Welcome to the world of newborn photography! As a professional photographer specialising in the first few weeks of your new baby’s life, I'd love to share this step-by-step guide on how to book a newborn session with me. This blog will cover when to book your session, how best to contact me, how to confirm your booking, how to preparing for your baby’s first photoshoot, what to expect in the session, and finally what happens afterwards and choosing the perfect package to suit your needs and budget.
Before we move on to the step-by-step guide on how to book a newborn session with me, here are a few things that are important for you to know about my style and approach before booking (which I hope you will!): My Style I specialise in posed studio photography. I love using clan tartans and any colour that will compliment your personal taste and your home decor. This may be soft, neutral colours, or a more bold and darker palette (my personal favourites). My Approach As a mum myself, I understand fully how delicate and precious newborns are. That's why I am trained in newborn safety and that is always my absolute top priority during every session. I take great care in posing and handling your baby while ensuring their comfort at all times. My sessions are very relaxed and I hope that the families I photograph enjoy the newborn session as much as I do. The aim of my sessions is that parents sit back and relax as they watch me photograph their baby. The families that I photograph return time and time again with their newborn babies, which is the biggest compliment and hopefully tells you as a prospective client that you can trust me to provide the very best newborn photography service that I possibly can. When to Book? I often get asked when the best time is to book in for your newborn session. The answer to this is that you can book any time from your 12 week scan, however I recommend booking in around your 20 week scan date to ensure availability. I know from personal experience, that it can be daunting to book in ahead of baby arriving, however leaving it until late in your pregnancy or when baby arrives greatly reduces the chance of me having capacity to take on any extra sessions. I can only take a limited number of newborn bookings per month in order that I can guarantee to have availability no matter when all of the babies that I have booked in choose to arrive. Now let's get started on how to book your newborn session with me! How Best to Contact Me? I aim to make booking a newborn session with me as easy and stress-free as possible. The first step is to reach out to me by email or by messaging me via Facebook or Instagram. You can also give me a call if you prefer. In our initial communication, we will discuss details such as your due date, my availability, and any specific ideas, poses or personal items that you would like included in your images i.e. like a special knitted blanket or family heirloom. I’ll send you my pricing brochure which details my session fee and the choice of digital image and print packages available to you to purchase after you view your proof images. How Do I Confirm My Booking? Your session is secured when the £99 session fee is purchased. You can do this here. When the session is booked, you’ll receive a short booking form via email. After that, all I ask is that you let me know as soon as possible after baby is born for us to arrange your studio session within the first 2-3 weeks. This is the optimum time for your session - when baby is still sleepy and curled up as they were in the womb. Only the session fee is required at this stage - You don’t need to choose a digital image or print package until after you view your proof images (within 4 weeks of your session). I can help you choose prints or wall art at your viewing session if you are undecided. What Do I Do Once Baby Arrives? Easy! Just let me know by email or private message the date that your baby has arrived and we’ll schedule your session within the first few weeks. Usually the sessions take place on a weekday morning and through experience, I find that 10am is the best time to start. I’ll email you a colour preference form which lets you tell me your favourite colours, poses and whether you would like parent images or if you are bringing any siblings along. Siblings can be brought in at the start or end of the session - whatever works best for your family. How Does a Typical Session Work? The evening before the session I will email you a model release form for you to sign. This is essential to grant me parental permission to photograph your baby and a contract that I have in place for all minors. On the morning of the session there are no requirements! All I ask is that you arrive with baby, milk and nappies and I will do the rest. I don’t ask you to do anything else. No need to keep baby awake or to feed at a certain time. I know that leaving the house with a newborn can be stressful enough and therefore you don’t need me adding to your to-do list! The session will be completely relaxed and led by your baby and what they need. If they are asleep when they arrive then we will most likely start with the unwrapped blanket poses. If they wake up, then baby can be fed (if they are due a feed) or I can wrap them up and do the wrapped shots. Please don’t stress for a second about your baby being unsettled in the session. There are so many different things we can do to make sure your baby is completely relaxed, settled, warm, fed and happy throughout. What Happens After the Session? The evening of your session, if you choose, I will edit one of your images and post it on my socials as a ‘sneak peek’. The majority of my clients are very keen for this, but you are never under any obligation. Your gallery of images will be ready within 4 weeks. Ideally, you will come back to the studio to view these and I can help you choose your prints and wall art, however, as many of my clients now travel a considerable distance, this can also be done via Zoom if preferred. I hope that all helps if you are trying to choose a newborn photographer and are considering me. Pleases do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries that I haven’t covered above, or if you’d just like a chat and to get to know me before booking in. I look forward to meeting you or welcoming you back! Lynne xx
